A Propos | About us

Haïti-Progrès (HP) is a US-based weekly newspaper founded in 1983, at a challenging time
for the country, during the dictatorship of Jean-Claude « Baby Doc » Duvalier who was in his
most savage repressive mode. The Haitian people’s resistance needed to have an echo on
the international stage, hence the birth of one of the oldest newspapers in the Haitian
Diaspora.
In addition to being the voice of the Haitian people, Haïti-Progrès was also instrumental in
exposing the plight of Haitian refugees fleeing the Duvalier dictatorship and defying death at
sea, in their quest for freedom. The United States continued its support of the dictatorship by
adopting a policy that ignored the political situation and branded all «boat people» as
economic refugees. Haïti-Progrès, working in solidarity with progressive groups, highlighted
the struggle of the Haitian people in Haïti, in the United States and throughout the diaspora.
Led by a group of dedicated individuals, Haïti-Progrès is published in the United States in
French, Kreyòl, English and Spanish, covering Haitian, international, as well as news affecting
the Haitian Diaspora. HP is distributed in the New York Tri-state area and throughout the
United States.
