Biden’s Rhetoric Can’t Wash Away Inaction on Immigration Justice

New York, NY—In response to President Joseph R. Biden’s State of the Union address, the New York Immigration Coalition issued the following statement.

Murad Awawdeh, Executive Director, New York Immigration Coalition:

“If the Biden administration hopes to push forward any sort of agenda after the midterm elections, it will need to deliver on the President’s promise to build a fair and humane immigration system that creates a path to citizenship for the 11 million immigrants who are American in every way. Yet, there was little in tonight’s address to the nation that revealed whether this remains a priority. Sadly, there was little in President Biden’s address to the nation which revealed whether the President would maintain his promise to immigrant Americans. While we will continue to hold the President and his administration accountable to make good on his commitment to us, we cannot rely solely on our leaders in Washington for immigration justice. We will need to turn to our local leadership as well. In New York, the NYIC aims to secure the passage of the Coverage for All Act so that every New Yorker, regardless of their immigration status, can access health care. We will end the Empire State’s collusion with ICE. And finally, we will secure additional monies to the groundbreaking Fund for Excluded Workers so working New Yorkers and their families remain NY tough. Our country can’t build back better or recover without immigrants. The time for action is now.”

The New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) is an umbrella policy and advocacy organization for more than 200 groups in New York State. We envision a New York state that is stronger because all people are welcome, treated fairly, and given the chance to pursue their dreams. Our mission is to unite immigrants, members, & allies so all New Yorkers can thrive. We represent the collective interests of New York’s diverse immigrant communities and organizations and devise solutions to advance them; advocate for laws, policies, and programs that lead to justice and opportunity for all immigrant groups; and build the power of immigrants and the organizations that serve them to ensure their sustainability, to improve people’s lives, and to strengthen our state.

#Coverage4All is a campaign to expand coverage to all New Yorkers. The campaign is a coalition of community members, community organizations, health care providers, legal service providers, and labor, immigrant, and health care consumer advocates. Our objective is to create a statewide health insurance product for New Yorkers who are excluded from eligibility for coverage because of their immigration status, by enacting A880/S1572. A campaign of Health Care for All New York (HCFANY), #Coverage4All is led by the New York Immigration Coalition and Make the Road New York.
